"Jimmy Giuffre used to play mostly in the lower register on the
clarinet and
rarely went above the break—the end of the first register. We used to kid him by
saying, 'When are you going to play above the break?,' which is a big step when you're learning the clarinet. Jimmy laughed and said, 'I’m
working my way up.' He loved that soft sound."

Aha! Grand to discover this brief snippet, which MUST be a preview of your upcoming multi-part Niehaus discourse. Who better to tell you, and us, about the Best of the West?

Well, that was definitely inadequate--I should have specified I was hoping for Part Two of an over time series of interviews with Niehaus, whose work old and new continues to fascinate. Blame it on my (absent) youth.
