I love Sonny, but to say jazz paved the way for the Civil Rights movement is misleading, I think. Its audience was already largely liberal and pro-equal rights. Better to look at rock and roll and its subsequent forms, which did more to integrate white and black attitudes in ways much more vital to issues of tolerance and racial/cultural co-existence.
