I love YouTube clips of couples doing the Twist, the Swim, the Shag and other dances between Congress' payola hearings of 1960 and the Beatles' arrival in 1964. It's not a voyeur thing. I just love the whole hip style, the obvious fun, and the agility needed to pull off these steps. I also love the independence of the moves—free from stiff steps and formality. So, to send you on your way this weekend, here's a series of my favorite clips a go-go...
A go-go vacation ad from the now defunct National Airlines...
At Los Angeles' Whisky A Go-Go in 1964...
At the Whisky in 1967...
German go-go dancing...
More European go-go dancing...
An odd 1962 Twist promo short (not quite sure why a pool would be in the middle of a supper club, but so be it)...
Do the Swim with Bobby Freeman...
Stage-rockin' with Bobby Fuller...
And lastly, over-the-top go-go dancers behind Chris Montez...
