In the 1950s, when the 12-inch album became dominant in jazz and pop, many labels needed musicians who could record perfectly in the fewest number of takes. Their skills included top-notch sight reading, the ability to play multiple instruments flawlessly and who could improvise fluidly.
To streamline their operations, record producers began hiring groups of top-notch musicians who could come in and make magic together. In New York, one such group of studio musicians became known as the the East Coast Sax Section.
This prolific group of five reed players was comprised of Hal McKusick and Gene Quill on alto saxophones, Zoot Sims and Al Cohn on tenor saxophones, and Sol Schlinger on baritone saxophone. Often times, Phil Woods or Sam Marowitz subbed for McKusick, or Eddie Wasserman might be in for Sims. Other subs were likely to be shuffled in if members of the core group had other studio obligations.
Sol Schlinger was a gifted sight reader, had a superb tone as the reed section's anchor and he could swing. I tracked him down in the early days of this blog, and he was a joy to interview, very funny on the phone and always generous with his time whenever I called him in Florida. Sol died in 2017, and yesterday would have been his 97th birthday.
