Tony

I really enjoyed Hal's recollections of Bird. As Bird recedes into history, he seems more a mythical figure than a real person, so it is always a pleasant surpise to find someone today offering such vivid memories and impressions. Coincidentally, I've been reading Ross Russell's "Bird Lives" bio of Parker. I know this book has taken some critical raps, so I wasn't expecting all that much. In my view, this is one of the best jazz biographies; very well written, vivid, insightful, informative. It contains some great recollections of Bird recording sesssions, especiall the Dial sessions that Russell ran. I recommend it.
