Another excellent interview series, Marc. Makes me wish I grew up on the 'Best Coast', especially near this fabled club! Thanks.

Hi Marc,
It's amazing how you manage to dig up new interesting angles of jazz history. In Sweden, it was difficult to get hold of the West Coast Jazz records in the 50s. So I do treasure the ones I was able to buy through various channels. Among them "Meet Mr. Gordon" (Pacific Records) w. Bob Gordon (died in a car accident at a very young age?) Jack Montrose, Joe Mondragon a.o.;
Chet Baker Sextet w. Bob Brookmeyer, Bud Shank, Russ Freeman, Carson Smith, Shelly Manne, also on Pacific r.;
Bud Shank and three trombones (rather valve trombones) w. Bob Enevoldsen, Stu Williamson and Maynard Ferguson on v-bones, and, again Shelly and Joe M. and Claude Willamson comping. Bob Cooper arranged (Pacific r.);
And, a rarity, Pacific jazz records 1205; Bud Shank and Bill Perkins w. Hampton Hawes, Red Mitchell & Mel lewis on side 1 and Bud Shank, Shorty Rogers, Jimmy Rowles, Harry Babasin & Roy Harte on side 2.;

Another West Coast treat is the Russ Freeman - Chet Baker quartet w. Shelly M. & Leroy Vinnegar.

A lot of text here, but I am glad to draw the attention of the JazzWax audience to the above-mentioned examples of West Coast Jazz at its best.

Finally, a beautiful synthesis of the West Coast sound can be heard at the 30 inch LP "Mel Tormé with Marty Paich dek-tette" including most of the musicians already mentioned.

Best regards/Anders

Hi, Marc! It's amazing that interview with Mr Rumsey!!! Thank you for that!!! I very interesting in sending email to Mr. Howard Rumsey. I'm researching about cuban percusionist in latin jazz and maybe he could be talk to me about Carlos Vidal during Lighthouse All Stars period. Can you help me to find Mr. Rumsey's email adress?? Thank you. Rosa M.
