Hey Marc - I've been in the Fairmont, but my greatest association with the place is that Shearing and Torme made their first collaboration there, issued on Concord, and a doozy... as far as I know, I think it may have even been their first performance together (anybody?).

Really enjoyed your bit on San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel. What a great room the Venetian was to play in its day. As you mentioned, it had exceptional acoustics.

I remember working there in the early '70s with Vikki Carr. One of her big numbers was a laid-back treatment of the "other" San Francisco -- the show tune usually played at a flag-waving tempo. Vikki's version never failed to stand the room on its ear.

Marc,your writing often has a bittersweet quality to it,which-for me-underscores what I've always found so compelling about "the music". That image of you singing "the glory that was Rome is of another day",in that particular,empty space,really nailed it for me. Most of us,when we admit it,have been there in our hearts-you got to live it out,although to an exclusively select audience. As if on cue,my jazz station played Tony singing "But Beautiful" as I began this. I'm sure it was...
