If you aren't familiar with Phil Schaap, a significant jazz-radio figure and educator who died last week at 70, or you are familiar with him and wish you could listen to his Bird Flight shows again or the many other special programs he hosted with acerbic passion, you're in luck. After asking around last week, radio host and Phil's colleague and friend, Sid Gribetz, of WKCR-FM in New York, pointed me to a page at Phil's site. Thanks to the devotion and hard work of archivists Charles Iselin and Matthew Rivera, Phil's broadcasts now live on for free as a service to those who still seek Phil's jazz education. To listen to hundreds of hours of Phil, go here. [Photo above of Sid Gribetz, right, with Phil Schaap]
JazzWax clip: Go to Phil's show page here and type "Parker with Strings" into the search bar. You'll wind up at Part 1 of four parts Phil put together for Bird Flight in 2017, each one running an hour and 18 minutes. The four shows spotlight all of Parker's live recordings with strings and the backstory.
