I'm away this week, as you probably could tell, but that doesn't mean JazzWax readers have to suffer. This weekend, I'm providing you with what I've long believed is one of the finest jazz documentaries ever made. It was directed by my dear friend Raymond De Felitta. The film is 'Tis Autumn: The Search for Jackie Paris.
Recently, Raymond has put the entire film up at his site. The film is the model of what all jazz documentaries should be: Not an endless string of talking heads or an infomercial but a poetic, emotional and romantic exploration with a strong story and point of view. Once you start it, you won't be able to stop. I've watched this documentary more than 25 times, so take it from me, it's impossible. The writing and direction is that good.
