Several weeks ago, following my post on late singer Carol Fredette's appearance on Bill Kirchner's new album, For All We Know, I received fan email from lyricist Roger Schore. Roger wrote to thank me for JazzWax and noted that he didn't go to sleep each night until he read my daily post, which goes up at 12:05 a.m., six days a week.
Roger's songs have been recorded by Carol Sloane, Meredith d'Ambrosio, Nancy Marano, Marlene VerPlanck, Daryl Sherman, Roseanna Vitro, Ronny Whyte, Eric Comstock, Dena DeRose, Alexis Cole, Jane Scheckter, Kurt Reichenbach and Barbara Lea. [Photo above of Roger Schore courtesy of Nancy Weinberg]
At any rate, in our back-and-forth email exchanges, we talked about Carol's voice on Bill's album. Roger also mentioned that Carol recorded a few songs that he wrote in 2013 with composer-pianist Nancy Weinberg. One of them, You
Can’t Trust Spring, was suggested to Roger by singer-pianist and

Curious, I asked Roger if I could hear it. He sent along the track. It was so lovely and timely that I asked Roger and Nancy if I could share it with you. They said, "Absolutely." But first, here's the backstory from Roger:
Hi Marc, the recording I sent was from a demo session that Carol did for Nancy Weinberg and me in 2016 at Sean Swinney’s studio, when it was located at West 54th Street. The studio has since relocated to West 35th St. The purpose of the session was to showcase this particular song (and two others) to see if we could interest singers in the material. Tedd Firth was the pianist and arranger, and Boots Malesson played bass. Sean Swinney engineered and did a great job, as did Carol, of course, and our top flight duo.
For the past 20 years, Nancy has held down the piano bench at Cafe Pierre at New York's Pierre Hotel on Monday evenings and has been a fixture at most of the city’s top hotel music rooms, including the Waldorf and Plaza. Our songwriting collaboration goes back over twenty years, to Nancy’s first CD, "My Shining Hour."
