Shortly after tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist Charlie Byrd released Jazz Samba in April 1962, West Coast jazz musicians began taking a shot at the bossa nova. Their relaxed sound and smooth improvisation was perfectly suited to the music. In fact, according to Bud Shank, whom I interviewed in 2008 on the bossa nova, West Coast jazz was a primary influence on those developing the music in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1950s.
In 1963, Liberty Records issued tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins's Bossa Nova: With Strings Attached. Arranged by Bob Florence, the album featured Perk with just strings and a rhythm section. While not as clever or as lyrical as Getz, Perk had a beautiful, fluid style and deeply sincere tone. The LP's songs are Meditation, Tres Palabras, Little Bird, Amor em Paz (Love in Peace), Florence's Obscurity, Joao, Samba de Orfeu, Baia, Little Boat, Pensativa, Out of This World and Florence's Summer Festival.
The now super-rare album was engineered by Bones Howe, who would go on to have a major career engineering many major sunshine pop recordings by groups such as the Association, the 5th Dimension and the Mamas & the Papas. The rest of the personnel on the album is unknown.
