Writer-director John Fordham's joyously poetic documentary Ronnie Scott and All That Jazz first appeared on the British TV Omnibus series in 1989. The film tells you all you need to know about Ronnie, his extraordinary talent on the tenor saxophone, his straight-faced sense of humor and the Soho club still in operation that he co-founded with Pete King in 1959. Ronnie passed in 1996. [Photo above of Ronnie Scott by (c)Val Wilmer/CTSImages]
Who is John Fordham? As reader Peter Vacher notes, "John Fordham is the Guardian newspaper’s very distinguished senior jazz writer. He’s also the author of a splendid illustrated tribute to the club on its 45th anniversary and a Scott biographer, so he was exactly the right man to script and present the documentary. He was my editor at Jazz UK magazine and a long-term friend. We have both worked as jazz obituary writers for the Guardian."
