Last week, in The Wall Street Journal, I interviewed supermodel Linda Evangelista for my "House Call' column in the Mansion section (go here). Linda talked about growing up in Canada, the event that soured her on modeling when she was young and her first ad that turned up in the local newspaper. Here's Linda in 1991...
And here's an overview...
What I'm watching.
Last week...
Manchester by the Sea (2016)—Drama film starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler and Lucas Hedges. The plot centers on the grief, guilt and disruption that follows a horrible family event. Affleck won an Oscar for his performance.
Still watching...
Killing Eve (2018-2022)—Dark, comedic British spy thriller starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer. I don't know how I missed this during the pandemic, but I did. Spectacular series. (Netflix)
The Veil (2024)—Waiting on new episodes to drop. Spectacular spy thriller miniseries starring Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men, The Handmaid's Tale) about a deadly game of truth, lies and a looming terrorist threat. (Hulu/FX)

Roger Kellaway. Following my post last week on pianist Roger Kellaway's new album Live at Mezzrow, I received the following from Mark Rabin [photo above of Roger Kellaway]...
Hi, Marc. Readers can find the two full nights of Roger Kellaway with Jay, Dennis and Roni at Small's on YouTube, though the audio is nowhere near as good as the album. The videos include many more performances and give us the opportunity to hear Roger sharing comments and backstories with the audience between songs.
Here is May 3, 2023...
And here is May 4, 2023...
Maynard Ferguson. Anyone who loves Maynard Ferguson's Boy With Lots of Brass (1957) loves Irene Kral's very first vocal recordings, including Moonlight in Vermont. Here's the track...
And here's George Hogg taking a crack at Maynard's solo...

Linda Ronstadt. Here's Linda with the Muppets in 1980...
Matt Forbes. The Canadian singer has just released a re-imagining of Charade that commemorates the April 16 centenary of Henry Mancini's birth. The arrangement is by Callum Au. As Matt notes, "It’s our homage to Nelson Riddle with a touch of John Barry thrown in for good measure." The downloadable single is available here and can be heard on most major streaming platforms. Here's the video. Heck of a singer...
Lenny Breau and Brad Terry. Here's a track from one of the prettiest jazz duet albums, featuring guitarist Lenny Breau and clarinetist Brad Terry (above). For more on these two, go here...
Allegra Levy—Out of the Question (SteepleChase). The opening track on Allegra Levy's new album—Benny Golson and Lee Morgan's Are You Real?—is a knockout. Allegra's voice is solid and playful, and the musicians are first-rate, featuring Carmen Staaf on piano, Mimi Jones on bass, Allison Miller on drums, with special guests Roxy Coss on saxophones, Aubrey Johnson on vocals, and Andrew Baird on guitar. Allegra is best when she takes on solid jazz songs, such as Horace Silver's Que Pasa?, Matt Dennis and Tom Adair's Will You Still Be Mine? and Michel Legrand's What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? You'll find the album on major streaming platforms.
Here's Are You Real...
Petra van Nuis—From Me to You (String Damper). Chicago jazz vocalist Petra van Nuis teams with exquisite pianist Dennis Luxion on an album of standards. The better ones are off the beaten path. What I like most about this album is the intimacy between Petra and Dennis on unexpected songs like Kris Kristofferson's Help Me Make It Through the Night and the standards Take Me in Your Arms and You Better Go Now. You'll find the album here and on major streaming platforms.
Here's You Better Go Now...
Obey Your Air-Raid Warden. I'm afraid our country has been nuts for decades. Here's a somewhat odd video featuring a vocal trio in 1942 offering 10 tips for surviving an enemy bombing attack on your neighborhood...
Ava Gardner. If you dig "rabbit holes," here's one for you: Yesterday, I read a fabulous piece on actress Ava Gardner by David Denby in The New Yorker (go here). Which, of course, led me to watch The Night of the Iguana (1964), which is considered Gardner's best pictue. And that led to a documentary on the film here [photo still above of Ava Gardner in The Night of the Iguana]...
And finally, three from the Bronx's Los Hermanos Colón...
Here's Welcome Back...
Here's Through the Years...
And here's After the Loving...
