This past week in The Wall Street Journal, I interviewed actress Heather Graham for my House Call column in the Mansion section (go here). Heather had a rough home life as a child but still managed to graduate high school with a 5.0 GPA. She then went on to UCLA and became an accomplished TV and film actress, most notably in Swingers, Boogie Nights and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. She currently stars in two films—Place of Bones, a Western, and Chosen Family, a comedy that she wrote and directed.
Here's the trailer for Place of Bones...
Here's the trailer for Chosen Family...
And here she is with Mike Myers in Austin Powers...
Also last week in the WSJ, my monthly Album@50 column for the Arts in Review section was on the Average White Band's AWB album (1974), also known as the White Album (go here). The LP is still perfect, from start to finish, and was ahead of its time, climbing to the top of Billboard's pop chart and reaching No. 2 on its soul chart. The vocals on the LP influenced many white artists who wanted to sing soul, including Daryl Hall, Michael McDonald and Mayer Hawthorne.

The Blacklist (2013-2023)—In this crime thriller series, James Spader plays an international criminal who turns over his top-10 list of the world's worst assassins to the FBI under one condition: That he interfaces only with FBI agent Elizabeth Keen (played by Megan Boone). Then they eliminate them one by one. Nonstop action (and gory at times), but never dull. (Netflix)

Mike Mainieri. Last week, Bill Kirchner sent along a gem—Mike Mainieri's Insight, a little-known quartet album by the vibraphonist on Solid State from 1968. Here's Autumn Leaves. The rest of the tracks will follow—or click to reach YouTube and listen to them all...
Dinah Washington. Director Raymond De Felitta sent along a link to Ed Beach's WRVR-FM tribute to Dinah Washington from the early 1970s. Ed was one of the finest and most engaging FM jazz radio DJs, as you'll soon hear. Go here.
Swedish insights. Bengt-Ove Boström in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a long-time JazzWax reader who has his own English-language blog, Musik.pm, that's worth checking out. His last two posts were on female vocalists Sílvia Pérez Cruz (from Spain, above) and Lina (from Portugal). Go here and here.
Enrico Le Noci—I'm Through With Love. Italian guitarist Enrico Le Noci is based in the Netherlands and just released a duet track, I'm Through With Love, with vocalist Carolina Peña. It's as lovely as can be. Go here...
L.C. Franke—Still in Bloom. The laid back singer-songwriter is a fascinating cross between Elvis Costello, Frankie Laine and Skinnay Ennis. Formerly known as Jeff Klein, he grew up in Austin, Texas, before moving to New York to become an indie rocker. He's mellowed and now works exclusively as a cunning crooner and composer. This album had me instantly with its ambitious originality and shrewd songwriting, singing and arrangements.
Hear for yourself...
And here he is live...
In New York on Sept. 24? Tessa Souter, a superb jazz vocalist, will be at Dizzy's Jazz Club on September 24 at 7 and 9 p.m. One night only so don't miss her if you're looking for a great night out. For more information and tickets, go here.
Here's Tessa's So Many Stars...
Dinah Washington radio. WKCR-FM's Sid Gribetz will present the music of Dinah Washington for five hours on Jazz Profiles this Sunday, September 1, from 2 to 7 p.m. To listen from anywhere in the world, go here.
Charles Bell, a jazz pianist who only recorded three complete albums, was recently covered by The New Yorker's Richard Brody (go here). Last week, my former college journalism professor, Bill Kirtz, sent along a link to In Concert, the full album by the Charles Bell Trio, featuring Charles Bell (p), Thomas Sewell (b) and William Harris, Jr. (d). It was recorded live at the Carnegie Lecture Hall in Pittsburgh, Pa., on November 9, 1963. Go here...
And finally, here's Britain's Davy Graham playing Cry Me a River on the BBC in 1959...
