In The Wall Street Journal last week, I interviewed comedian Nate Bargatze (pronounced BAR-gate-zee) for my House Call column in the Mansion section (go here). Nate talked about the childhood roots of his family-friendly stand-up comedy. He's hosting a CBS stand-up special on December 19, and his next Netflix comedy special starts streaming on December 24. Just viewed and highly recommend...
The Only Girl in the Orchestra (2023)—This wonderful short documentary looks at the retirement of Orin O'Brien at age 87. O'Brien, a daughter of movie stars and a bassist, was the only full-time woman in the New York Philharmonic and was hired by conductor Leonard Bernstein in 1966. A touching look at a modest woman who lived her passion and gave the bass and music everything she had. A special thanks to Don Messina for recommending. (Netflix)
Here's the trailer...
The Lioness (2023-current)—Another series by the stunningly prolific Taylor Sheridan, who is responsible for Yellowstone, 1883, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, 1923 and Landman. This spy thriller had a successful season 1, and season 2 launched in October. Lots of action and smart dialogue. (Paramount+)

Swingle Singers. Following my post last week on the Swingle Singers' 1968 Christmastime LP, I found this clip of them on the London Tube in 2010...
Want another great Swingle Singers album? Here ya go...
Tony Bennett. This time of year, with the 92nd lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree just days ago, I couldn't help but think back to the kindness and holiday swing of Tony Bennett. Here's Tony singing Winter Wonderland...
Miss the lighting? It's a major New York tradition that sets the season here in motion. Here it is...
Tree origin. Here's where this year's tree came from...
Johnny Mathis, too. What a great guy he is. Gracious and open. Go here...
To read my House Call columns with Tony and Johnny, go here and here.
One more. Here's Burt Bacharach's The Bell That Couldn't Jingle...
And finally, here's Andy Williams and his brothers singing I Love the Winter Weather and Winter Wonderland...
