Wonderful of you to remember an over looked Sinatra film. You prompted me to dig out one of my favorite Frank collections, “Sinatra in Hollywood 1940-1964.” I was reminded the piano part that Frank mimes in the film is played by Andre’ Previn, and the orchestration by Johnny Green. You highlight songs from the film that were overshadowed by “Time After Time,” which is the best remembered.
In an ironic twist, Sonny Rollins, who would later immortalize the Williamsburg bridge, was in high school during this time. His school was experiencing racial strife, and Frank Sinatra visited the school to give a talk about racial tolerance and sing “The House I live In.” Sonny said it had a profound impact on him, and made him a Sinatra fan for life. In the wake of Sonny’s death, there is a petition to rename the bridge after him.
Dear Peter, I just dig out my box "Sinatra in Hollywood 1940 - 1964". This box was released in 2002. 24 years ago!!! It's also one of my favorite Sinatra collections. The book alone, which is included, is worth the money. 119 pages with exact dates, great articles and photos. I just looked at the book and I almost forgot that there is the allknown "The Brooklyn Bridge" track AND the same track with an alternate Ending/Outtake with the note: "This section was not used in the final film and contains slightly altered lyrics". Well, it's time to hear this box again. 🙂
Great post, Marc 👍. And the photos from the filming of the production at the bridge are wonderful. I just found out that I have only an old VHS from the movie. So just ordered the latest release of the movie. A DVD, which was released in 2019. 📺
Hi Marc, I tried to watch with the soundstage filming in mind and boy, even by today’s standards, they couldn’t have done a better job. The cars and trains running along side the bridge still fool me into thinking that most of it was shot on the very bridge.
