Born Albert Atkinson in Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1922, A.K. Salim was a composer, arranger and, for a time, an alto saxophonist. His recording career began as an arranger for Gene Ammons in 1947, moving on to Illinois Jacquet in 1952 and Count Basie in 1949, ‘52 and ‘54.
