What a treat to have these made available and double treat to hear Pepper in the company of some of the best Canadian musicians at that time, especially legendary pianist Chris Gage. He allegedly turned down offers to join Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Frankie Lane and Gerry Mulligan. Gage died at the age of 37 in 1964. Very exciting to have so much more music by Art Pepper and Chris Gage playing together.
I was always interested in Canadian musicians since I'm a big fan of Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass since many years. So I'm happy to hear this new great Art Pepper set with Musiciens Canadiens. ππΉπΊπ·π₯
No question that I'll cop this set. I love all those '50s things and his work with Marty Paich, who considered him a first call. I was lucky enough to hear and record him late in his life. The recording was in '77 with a Chicago rhythm section, and is in the LAJI archive. The last hearing was a few months before he passed, with his touring band that included the wonderful Roger Kellaway. He was still a monster at the end -- the Jazz Institute of Chicago booked him for their upcoming festival on the basis of that set -- and I came back a second night for more. On both occasions Art blew me away, but so did Kellaway, who did it on the same stage with Art! There are some nights of music I'll never forget. First, was Rollins at McKie's in '64; next was the Kenton band at Cincy's Moonlight Gardens, next was the Mulligan CJB with Brookmeyer, Sarah with Basie around '80, when billed Della Reese couldn't make it -- she sang Basie's vocal charts, tunes with the rhythm section -- and that Art Pepper set.
Wonderful new set. I just ordered it from my favourite CD dealer. It will be released here in Germany on March 6th.
I'm thrilled that there are always interesting releases on CD. Years ago it was said again and again that CDs wouldn't survive just like LPs. And where are we now? Vinyl records are selling better than 10 years ago and CDs can still be found in all the (online)-stores.
Right now I'm sitting in a train to Switzerland to visit a friend of mine and also do some vacation.
Good opportunity to read older Jazzwax posts that I don't know yet. As Marc always writes correctly, only paid subscribers can access the entire archive. π
Hi Christian. Thanks for your kind words. Youβll love the Pepper box, start to finish. Iβm envious of your vacation destination. Then again, New York looks a bit Swiss today given all of the snow. Wishing you a safe trip and warm visit!

I was lucky to be Gary Smulyan's neighbor. He took me to a couple of the last gigs of Art Pepper.I am really glad he did.
Never enough Art Pepper for me, so thanks for the heads up as I had no idea about this set.
