I can recall Hal McKusick telling me how he used Bill Evans before anyone. I think the only record date that preceded Hal’s was by Mundell Lowe, if I’m not mistaken. Amazing how both Bill and Coltrane blossomed exponentially in 1957.
I spent many afternoons in Hal’s music parlor. My fondest memory is of the day I noticed the sheet music for “Blue in Green” on his vintage Steinway. I asked him if he would play it. Yes, Hal could play the piano.
