In 1973, bassist Chuck Israels formed the National Jazz Ensemble (NJE), also known as the Chuck Israels Orchestra. Two years later, Chuck arranged a rendition of Bill Evans’s Very Early and asked Evans to play as a guest on the track. Fortunately, Chiaroscuro Records’ founder and producer Hank O’Neal recorded the song as part of two albums with the NJE.
