November has settled in neatly in New York this past week. We received an arctic blast on Tuesday that pushed temperatures down to just above freezing. The blast also sent along a strong late-autumn wind that shook the trees free of whatever colorful leaves they had left. It’s a cozy time of year, when thoughts turn to Thanksgiving.
For those who subscribed as free, here’s what you missed last week by not upgrading to paid: Six sensational new jazz albums with audio clips, a new album from original cool-jazz tenor saxophonist Ted Brown, and audio of the Miles Davis Quintet playing a searing So What at the first Playboy Jazz Festival in Chicago in 1959—10 days before his Kind of Blue album was released!
How to upgrade—Find the “Upgrade to paid” button on any post or in the “Manage subscription” section of your account settings. Give it a click, choose a plan.
Now, some fun. Last weekend, Mark Rabin sent along links to three lovely recent concert streams. They feature singer-pianist Dena DeRose, vocalist Caity Gyrogy and singer-pianist Champian Fulton. I love them all and had to share. A big thanks to Mark.
Here’s the great Dena DeRose with Akira Tana (b) and Peter Barshay (d) at Meyhouse in Palo Alto, Ca...
As Mark noted in his email to me, Meyhouse has been sharing some fine performances on their recently revitalized channel (go here).
Here’s Caity Gyrogy, whom I interviewed for JazzWax here, at Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues in Portsmouth, NH...
And here’s Champian Fulton with guitarist Frank Vignola and clarinetist and saxophonist Ken Peplowski…
Mark shared one of the comments on the YouTube upload that’s spot-on: “It’s a joy to watch Champian gently play the bass notes with her left hand while the right one hits the keys like they owe her money.”
One more thing—Coleman Hawkins radio. Next Friday, Nov. 21, WKCR-FM in New York will be celebrating the tenor saxophonist’s birthday by playing his records for 24 hours starting at midnight. To listen from anywhere in the world, go here.
