Gene Bertoncini, a free-style jazz guitarist who recorded extensively in the 1960s with flugelhornist Clark Terry, flutist Herbie Mann and multiple big bands but didn’t start recording as a leader of small groups until the late 1970s, when he teamed with bassist Michael Moore, died on August 29.
