I saw him at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. He exploded after his recording with David Lynch. He was sublime, his phrasing and build-ups still intact. I was buying all I could of his work on cds. On one of them I was surprised to see Patience Higgins on tenor sax, my friend from the old days in Vancouver. I hoped he would be playing with Scott on this night so we could reconnect (way before email and internet), alas he was not.
It’s great that everyone here in the comments has seen Jimmy Scott live - and I can count myself among them. I just went through my program guides from the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands. I saw Jimmy Scott live on July 14th , 2000 in the "Van Gogh Zaal". That small hall was among many others within the large congress center in The Hague. The festival was held in The Hague until 2005, and has been in Rotterdam since 2006. I can still remember Jimmy Scott's performance very well - partly because it was the only time I ever saw him live. I saw many amazing singers in the Van Gogh Zaal: Shirley Horn, Diana Krall, Betty Carter, Rita Reys, Carol Sloane, etc. Great memories!
I had no idea there was a documentary about Jimmy Scott. It’s a shame that it’s been kept from us fans so far. It’s surely down to rights issues and funding.
One of my favorite singers. I ran into him at O'Hare Airport one time and gushed over him. In retrospect it was kind of embarrasing, but it would have been a missed opportunity had I not.
I got to see him once at Scullers in Boston in the early 2000s..he could hold an emotional phrase that begged to be completed until it brought you to tears remembering being there once yourself…only seeing Betty Carter live gave me that feeling when she hit it right..

Love Jimmy Scott, saw him here at the Jazz Bakery. What a unique voice he had.

Heard Jimmy live in 1987 as he began his comeback: All, or nothing at all!
