I just looked at the old program schedules from the Northsea Jazzfestival in The Hague, Netherlands. It's strange, I remember the concert from Kenny Burrell very clearly in 1989. This was the first year, I visited the Festival. I was 19 years old and fortunately, I was able to experience many more jazz legends from that time on. Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Cab Calloway, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Shirley Horn, Joe Williams, Tito Puente, Gerald Wilson, Al Jarreau, Burt Bacharach (yes, he was also at Northsea), Jim Hall, Lionel Hampton, etc. I have so much great memories of these concerts 👍.
Last year I bought the Kenny Burrell Double-CD from Blue Note Records "At The Five Spot Cafe - The Complete Masters" from 1959. A wonderful live recording. But I don't know the album "Earthy". So I just ordered the "4 Classic Albums on 2 CDs"-Box from your link.
Thanks so much for enlightening me about this great album from Kenny!
I have enjoyed some of his tunes in the past like the “live at five spot” album, but I had not researched enough to be familiar with his various old albums from 50s/60s, which are now my faves. I listened to the “earthy” album last night as I was reading your article - and jumped into others today: “soul call” & the burrell & coltrane record.
I have hazy memories but was glad to be able to see Kenny & many others in New York in the ‘80s for a tribute concert to Wes Montgomery.
When I sub a guitarist in my quartet gig next week (vs my regular pianist), I’ll be requesting some hip tunes by Kenny !
