WJZ
Back in the late 40s and early 50s my friend Barry and I would sit up half the night to listen to Symphony Sid. WJZ, "where everything's crazy on JZ," came in pretty clearly on AM radio. Barry and I bonded over bebop. We were a minority of two.
Between records Sid often had some pretty guitar music in the background. He would say something like, "And that's Laurindo.....". Indeed it was Laurindo Almeida and the tune was usually "Brazilliance." I had never heard anything like it. How could anybody play guitar like that? Today we would think of it as rather routine bossa nova but then it seemed like a miracle.
That started me studying classical guitar and attempting to fuse it with the modern jazz idiom. I failed in this.
So sorry to hear of your loss Malcolm. Sounds like you two had quite a jazz club between you. The beauty of music is that it lifts us up, makes us think, soothes sadness and even takes us back to wonderful times. For that, we are all grateful. Best, Marc
Marc, what a great treasure. This collection, even without the Beatles beautiful covers, is all-star. Thank you so much.
