Rather than add updates about the site on my weekday posts and interrupt your fun, I’ve decided to send along occasional notes over the weekend.
To my many paid subscribers—Thank you so much for your generosity. I appreciate your support enormously. The following are tips for smooth access to the site and how to maximize your pleasure.
Access—Paid subscribers receive all five of my weekly posts and unlimited access to the site. You can read daily posts by clicking on the email you receive each day in your mailbox or by going to JazzWax.com directly and logging in, which lets you roam around the site at will.
The tabs—these are the category labels across the top of the site that let you easily find what you’ve read or have missed. Here’s what you’ll find when you click on each of them:
Jazz101 features posts on jazz history.
Albums are posts on records.
Songs are my posts on tracks.
Films feature jazz documentaries.
Interviews are new JazzWax Q&As.
Beyond is for my non-jazz posts.
2007-2025 is the archive for the old JazzWax, all 6,000 posts dating back to 2007.
WSJ features my weekly interviews and essays for The Wall Street Journal (you’ll need a WSJ.com subscription to access these posts).
And About tells you a bit about me.
In the works—A few words on the Archive. The great Stuart Anello is hard at work making this section spectacular. Soon, all 6,000 classic JazzWax posts will be accessible via a Google search or by using the search function in the 2007-2025 section.
Stuart has also built a list on the home page of all my pre-Substack interviews. They are alphabetized by first name. They are free to paid subscribers and are linked. Simply click on the name to access the interview. As for the multi-part interview, they will soon be united in one post for your convenience. I’ll let you know when this has been completed.
Upgrading—To those who are still listed as free, please consider upgrading to paid. JazzWax has value. It is common practice to pay for things that enrich us. This is true of museums, colleges, movies, streaming platforms, jazz clubs, restaurants, albums and hotels, to name a few. JazzWax included.
If you signed up for free, you’re receiving only two posts a week and missing out on the remaining three and the full JazzWax experience—the new site and the classic JazzWax from August 2007 to August 2025. You’re also missing out on reader comments and the ability to comment on posts.
If you love JazzWax, please consider supporting the site and the hard work being done by upgrading to a paid subscription.
Here’s how to upgrade—Find the “Upgrade to paid” button on a post or in the “Manage subscription” section of your account settings.
Now, a gift for reading this note. Last week, Gary Dailey sent along a link to a new, free PBS documentary on King Records. Here is is…
