Steve Allen is an interesting figure. Back when the entertainment industry was known as “show business” and Broadway was still the Runyonesque realm of serious actors, Allen seemed omnipresent, uniting jazz and all manner of live performance. In return, many of his songs were arranged and recorded by others who devoted albums to his melodies and lyrics.
