Yusef Lateef didn’t have a single sound. He had many. Lateef played mostly tenor saxophone and flute, but he also recorded on oboe, bassoon, bamboo flute, piano and a range of world-music wind instruments. He could be stormy and abstract and as gentle as a lamb—all on one track. He also loved pop as much as Pan African jazz and the avant-garde.
