Love how this captures the pre-digital moment when you'd buy music based on a feeling the cover gave you. That whole sensory package of jazz mystique before streaming atomized it all. Back in college I'd spend hours in record stores just absorbing cover art, and it genuinely shaped what I ended up listening to more than any algorithm couldve.
I made myself a chrismas present and ordered the book a few minutes ago 🙂. Strangly enough my LP/CD collection is full of the labels Blue Note, Impulse, Atlantic, etc., but very few from the Prestige label. So it's also a welcome book to add to my Prestige collection. I'm really looking forward for this book. Thanks for the recommendation, Marc.
I'd be interested to know whether the book covers the later era of Prestige's art which carried on to Cobblestone and Muse. Black and white photographs with jarring pink and purple text.
